Shellfish Hatchery Operator at H.M. Terry Co.
H.M. Terry Co., a leader in sustainable shellfish aquaculture on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, is seeking a motivated and
dependable individual to join our hatchery team. The Shellfish Hatchery Operator is responsible for assisting in the daily
operations of the hatchery, including the spawning, larval rearing, algae culture, and nursery phases of shellfish
production. This role offers hands-on opportunity to work directly with commercial quantities of clams and oysters
produced in our hatchery and be a part of a family business that has been farming shellfish on the Shore for generations.
Responsibilities:
ï‚· Perform daily husbandry of algal culture, broodstock, larvae, and seed.
ï‚· Operate and maintain hatchery systems, including pumps, filters, plumbing, and aeration systems to maintain
optimal growing conditions.
ï‚· Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tanks, and work areas to ensure proper hatchery
sanitation and biosecurity.
ï‚· Support season demands that will require flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and
holidays.
ï‚· Collect water on the appropriate tidal cycle.
ï‚· Assist with the spawning, feeding, and rearing of shellfish (oysters, clams, etc.) through various life stages with
the use of a compound microscope.
ï‚· Monitor water quality (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.), record data accurately, conduct water
quality testing and maintain accurate records.
ï‚· Harvest and transfer shellfish between systems (larval tanks, nursery systems, etc.).
ï‚· Follow safety procedures and assist with general facility maintenance.
ï‚· Support the hatchery team in meeting production goals and schedules.
Required Skills:

ï‚· Dependable, detail oriented, and eager to learn.
ï‚· Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform physical tasks in a wet, outdoor, strenuous environment.
ï‚· Comfortable with operating a compound microscope.
ï‚· Ability to work independently and teamwork.
ï‚· Must be able to communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and managers.
ï‚· Previous aquaculture, hatchery, or shellfish farming experience is a plus but not required.
ï‚· Comfortable working in wet, outdoor, and physically demanding environments.
ï‚· Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, or variable hours as hatchery production requires.
