Adventures in Writing and Art (1:00-4:00PM)

Are you interested in exploring the art of writing and creating visual art that connects to your writing? This is the camp for you. Together with other young, creative writers, you will try out new ways to write, choosing ideas and topics that are important to you. Work with artist Kathleen Schmalz to create visual art that illustrates your writing. You will share your writing and art with other young authors and artists by publishing your work on the ѻý website along with the creative work of other ѻý summer camp participants.

When?

Tuesday July 4 - Friday July 7, 2023; 1:00 - 4:00pm.

Note: We are also offering an optional full-day option from 9am; please see below for more information.

Who?

This camp is designed for students aged 9-12 years.

Cost:

$225 (including tax).

If the fee is a barrier to your participation, a limited number of bursaries are available for eligible families - please email camps@visst.ca to inquire.

Where?

ѻý (ѻý): #200 - 1490 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC.

Why should you attend?

  • Explore writing and art together. Meet other creative writers and learn more about how to create art using an interesting combination of materials that you may have not tried in school.

  • This is your chance to try out new ways of writing, and to create art with an artist who sells her work for a living.

  • Learn from established artists and experienced writers.

  • Earn a certificate of completion from the Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology.

What will you learn?

Through daily one-on-one mentoring with both instructors, you will:

  • Explore story, memoir, poetry and non-fiction form of writing. Choose your own genre to write and illustrate as a final project. 

  • Combine writing and art using a variety of interesting materials from sidewalk chalk, oil pastels, black and white photography and more.

  • Create artwork to further express your writing. Studies have shown that some students get inspiration from their artwork and use it to write stories around the art they created.

  • Publish your writing on our “Student Work” page.

Camp Instructors

Linda Edworthy, Founding Humanities Teacher, ѻý

Linda Edworthy is a PhD candidate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Victoria, and an experienced teacher with over 25 years of K-12 teaching experience in both public and private schools. She has also worked on professional development for teachers and worked with Dr. Brock Smith to support curricular planning for a middle school entrepreneurship project, . Her K-12 teaching experience includes creating a gifted education program for middle school students, with the goal of knowing and supporting learner passions in literacy. Kathleen Schmalz, Artist and Instructor, University of Victoria

Kathleen is a commissioned painter, artist and photographer who lives in Sooke, BC where she gets inspired by the natural beauty of the area. In addition to having been part of several exhibitions and publications, Kathleen is also an elementary school teacher, lecturer and professor at several Universities in North America. Make it a Full-Day camp

If you want to make this a full day camp experience, you can register for our A Sustainable World camp from 9:00-12:00noon (July 4-7). Students who take both camps can stay at ѻý for lunch (please bring your own) from 12:00-1:00pm.
